How to Fix Text Typed with Caps Lock On
Quick ways to repair text accidentally typed in capitals or in inverted case, and how to prevent the problem in future.
It happens to everyone: you look up from the keyboard and discover a whole paragraph WRITTEN IN CAPITALS, or worse, iNVERTED cASE because Caps Lock was on while you used Shift.
Fix all-caps text
- Copy the paragraph.
- Paste it into the case converter.
- Click Sentence case. Everything becomes lowercase except the first letter of each sentence and the word "I".
- Re-capitalize names, places and acronyms.
- Copy it back.
Fix inverted text
Text such as "hELLO tHERE, hOW ARE YOU?" happens when Caps Lock is on and you press Shift for capitals. Two options:
- Click InVeRsE CaSe to swap every letter's case. "hELLO tHERE" becomes "Hello There".
- Or click Sentence case for a clean, standard result.
In Microsoft Word
Word often corrects inverted text automatically when it detects the Caps Lock pattern. For larger blocks, select the text and press Shift + F3 to cycle case.
Prevent it in future
- Turn on a Caps Lock indicator or sound. On Windows, the "Toggle Keys" accessibility setting plays a tone when Caps Lock is pressed.
- Remap Caps Lock to another key, such as Ctrl, if you rarely use it.
- Watch for the warning many login screens show when Caps Lock is on, which also prevents failed password attempts.
Why not just retype?
For a sentence, retyping is fine. For a long email or report, conversion is faster and avoids introducing new typos.
