A free online word counter built for writers, students and SEO

Whether you are drafting a college essay with a strict word limit, writing a blog post that needs to rank on Google, or squeezing a message into a social media caption, an accurate word count matters. The NS Tools Hub word counter is a free online tool that counts words and characters in real time and adds the extra numbers professional writers rely on: sentences, paragraphs, unique words, average word length, reading time and speaking time.

Because it also tracks sentences and paragraphs, it doubles as a sentence counter and paragraph counter, and the timing panel works as a reading time calculator and speaking time calculator. Students often use it as an essay word counter, since the online word count updates the instant you paste.

It also works as a lightweight SEO content checker. The keyword density panel shows which words and phrases you repeat most, which is the quickest way to confirm your focus keyword appears naturally without crossing into keyword stuffing.

Character count with and without spaces

Many platforms count characters differently. Some limits include spaces (SEO title tags, meta descriptions, X posts and SMS messages), while translation agencies and some academic forms count characters without spaces. Our character count tool shows both numbers side by side. It counts emoji, accented letters and symbols as single characters, the way a reader sees them, so your totals match what you will see when you publish.

How reading time is calculated

Reading time is estimated at 238 words per minute, the average silent reading speed for adults reading non-fiction in English. Speaking time uses 130 words per minute, a comfortable pace for presentations and podcasts. These estimates help bloggers add “5 min read” labels, help students time a speech, and help marketers plan video scripts.

How to check keyword density

Keyword density is the share of your total words taken up by a specific word or phrase. To check it, paste your article, switch on “Ignore common words” so filler words like “the” and “and” are hidden, then look at the 1, 2 and 3-word tabs. If your main keyword is missing, add it to your introduction and a heading. If a single phrase sits far above everything else, rewrite some instances with synonyms. There is no perfect percentage; Google rewards helpful, natural writing, so use density as a sanity check rather than a target.

Length targets: meta description character limit, SEO title length and social posts

  • SEO title tags: about 50–60 characters usually display in full in search results.
  • Meta descriptions: roughly 150–160 characters before Google may truncate them.
  • X (Twitter): the standard Twitter character limit is 280 characters per post.
  • Instagram captions: the Instagram caption character limit is 2,200 characters.
  • SMS: the SMS character limit is 160 characters for plain text, or 70 if the message contains emoji.
  • Common App personal essay: the Common App essay word limit is 650 words, and other college essay word count limits are often 150 to 300 words.

Platform limits change from time to time, so treat these as guides and check the platform when precision matters.

Who uses a word count tool?

Students use it to meet essay and assignment limits, and to answer questions such as how many words per page a double-spaced essay holds (about 250). Bloggers and content marketers use it to plan article length and check SEO copy. Copywriters use it for ad text, product descriptions and email subject lines. Authors track manuscript progress, and translators quote jobs by word or character count. Because the tool needs no account and saves your draft only in your own browser, it is a fast, private alternative to opening a full word processor.

Frequently asked questions

Is this word counter free to use?

Yes. The NS Tools Hub word counter is completely free, requires no sign-up and has no word limit.

Does the word counter save or upload my text?

No. Your text is processed entirely in your browser and is never sent to our servers. A draft is saved only in your own browser's local storage so it survives a page refresh; clearing the box removes it.

What is the difference between characters with and without spaces?

Characters with spaces counts every letter, number, punctuation mark and space. Character count without spaces removes spaces, tabs and line breaks. SEO titles, social posts and SMS limits normally include spaces.

How is reading time calculated?

Reading time divides your word count by 238 words per minute, the average adult silent reading speed. Speaking time uses 130 words per minute, a typical presentation pace.

What is a good keyword density for SEO?

There is no official ideal percentage. Most SEO professionals aim for natural use: include the main keyword in the title, introduction and a heading, then write naturally. If one phrase dominates the density list, it may read as keyword stuffing.

How long does it take to read 1,000 words?

About 4 minutes at an average silent reading speed of 238 words per minute, or about 7.5 minutes spoken aloud. For speeches, a 5 minute speech word count is roughly 650 words.

How long should a product description be?

For most products, 150 to 300 words plus a specification list works well. Simple, low-cost items can need less; see our guide on product description length.

How does the counter handle hyphenated words and contractions?

Hyphenated words such as “well-known” and contractions such as “don’t” count as one word, matching the behavior of most word processors.

Can I count words in languages other than English?

Yes. The counter recognizes letters from all alphabets, including accented Latin, Cyrillic, Greek and Arabic. Languages written without spaces between words, such as Chinese and Japanese, are better measured by character count.
