How Reading Time Is Calculated (and Why It Matters)

Learn the formula behind "5 min read" labels, the average reading speeds used, and how showing reading time can improve engagement on your blog.

Many blogs show a small label such as "6 min read" under the headline. That number is not a guess; it comes from a simple formula based on average reading speed.

The basic formula

Reading time (minutes) = total words / reading speed (words per minute)

Our word counter uses 238 words per minute, a widely cited average for adults silently reading non-fiction in English. A 1,500-word article therefore takes about 6.3 minutes, which most sites round to "6 min read".

Why different sites show different times

  • Different speeds. Some publishers use 200 wpm, others 250 or 265 wpm. Slower assumptions give longer estimates.
  • Images and code. Some platforms add extra seconds for each image, because readers pause to look at them.
  • Technical content. Dense material such as legal text or programming tutorials is read more slowly, so the real time is often longer than the estimate.

Reading time vs speaking time

Speaking is slower than silent reading. A comfortable presentation pace is around 130 words per minute, which is why our counter shows speaking time separately. A 650-word speech takes about five minutes to deliver.

Why reading time helps your content

  • It sets expectations. Readers decide whether to read now or save the post for later.
  • It can reduce bounce rate. A short estimate encourages a quick read, while a long estimate signals depth to readers who want a complete guide.
  • It helps planning. Podcast scripts, video voice-overs and newsletter sections can be timed before recording or sending.

Adding reading time to your site

Most content management systems have a plugin or theme setting for reading time. If you write static pages, calculate it once with a word counter and add it by hand. Keep the label honest; rounding a 12-minute article down to "5 min read" damages trust when readers notice.

Frequently asked questions

How to calculate reading time?

To calculate reading time, divide the total word count by an average reading speed. With 238 words per minute, a 1,500-word post takes about 6 minutes. Our reading time calculator does this automatically as you type.

What is the average reading speed of adults?

Research reviewing many studies puts the average reading speed of adults at about 238 words per minute for silent reading of non-fiction, and around 260 words per minute for fiction. Individual reading speed varies widely, from under 200 to well over 300 words per minute.

How to add reading time to a blog?

Most blogging platforms show reading time automatically or through a theme setting or plugin. On a static site, calculate it once with a word counter and add "6 min read" under the title. Round to the nearest minute and keep it honest.

How to read faster?

To read faster, reduce re-reading, preview headings before you start, and read in phrases rather than single words. Practice with material slightly above your comfort level. Expect gradual gains; claims of reading thousands of words per minute with full understanding are not supported by research.
