What Is the Ideal Blog Post Length for SEO?

Why there is no single perfect word count for SEO, how search intent decides length, and practical word-count ranges for common types of blog posts.

"How long should my blog post be?" is one of the most common questions in content marketing. The honest answer is that the right length is the length needed to fully answer the searcher's question, and nothing more. Google does not reward word count by itself. It rewards pages that satisfy search intent.

Let search intent set the length

Before writing, search your target keyword and open the top five results. Note their approximate word counts and, more importantly, what they cover. If every result is a 300-word definition, a 4,000-word essay will not help. If every result is a detailed tutorial with screenshots, a short post will struggle.

Typical ranges by post type

Post typeTypical length
Quick answer or definition300 to 700 words
News or update400 to 900 words
How-to tutorial1,000 to 2,000 words
Comparison or review1,500 to 2,500 words
Ultimate guide or pillar page2,500 to 5,000+ words

These are starting points, not rules. A brilliant 800-word tutorial beats a padded 2,000-word one.

Why longer posts often rank well

Long-form content tends to rank for more keyword variations because it covers subtopics, examples and related questions. It also earns more backlinks because it is more useful as a reference. The benefit comes from depth, not from the number on the counter.

How to use a word counter while writing

  • Set a target range based on the competing pages.
  • Check the word count and reading time as you draft, and add a reading time label to your post.
  • If you are far below the range, ask what questions you have not answered yet.
  • If you are far above it, look for repetition, long introductions and sections that belong in a separate article.

The best length is the one where a reader finishes your post and does not need to click back to search again.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a blog post be?

Long enough to fully answer the reader's question. For most topics that means somewhere between 1,000 and 2,000 words, but quick answers can be far shorter. Check the content length of the pages already ranking for your keyword, then aim to be more useful, not just longer.

Does word count affect SEO?

Not directly. Does Google count words? Google has said word count is not a ranking factor, so it does not count words to decide rankings. Word count matters indirectly: thin content that skips important details struggles to rank, while thorough long-form content tends to answer more searches. Focus on search intent and completeness.

What is thin content?

Thin content is a page that adds little value: very short posts, copied text, auto-generated filler or pages that exist only to target a keyword. It is a quality problem, not a word-count problem; a 300-word answer can be excellent and a 2,000-word page can still be thin.

Is short-form content still worth publishing?

Yes. Short-form content works well for news, definitions, quick how-tos and social posts. Mix it with long-form guides, and match blog post word count to the question rather than to a fixed rule about content length and rankings.
