Unique Words and Vocabulary Variety in Your Writing
What the unique word count tells you, how to measure lexical variety, and how to reduce repetition without overcomplicating your writing.
The unique words figure in our word counter shows how many different words appear in your text. Compared with the total word count, it gives a quick sense of vocabulary variety.
Type-token ratio
Linguists call total words "tokens" and different words "types". Dividing unique words by total words gives the type-token ratio (TTR). If a 200-word paragraph uses 130 different words, its TTR is 0.65.
Be careful when comparing texts of different lengths. Longer texts naturally repeat common words such as "the" and "and", so their ratio falls even when the writing is varied. Compare passages of similar length for a fair picture.
Why variety matters
- Readability. Repeating the same adjective or verb makes prose feel flat.
- SEO. Varied, related vocabulary helps search engines understand a topic broadly instead of seeing one phrase repeated.
- Persuasion. Precise words convey nuance: "doubled" says more than "increased a lot".
How to improve variety without overdoing it
- Use the keyword density panel with common words ignored to spot overused terms.
- Replace vague verbs ("get", "make", "do") with specific ones ("earn", "build", "complete").
- Vary sentence openings so paragraphs do not all start with "The" or "This".
- Use pronouns once a subject is clear.
When repetition is good
Technical writing, instructions and legal text should repeat key terms consistently. Switching between "user", "customer" and "client" for the same person confuses readers. Repetition is a problem only when it is accidental and adds no meaning.
Aim for clarity first and variety second. A thesaurus can help, but an unfamiliar word chosen only to avoid repetition often reads worse than the original.
