How Upside-Down Text Works (Unicode Explained)
Why you can paste upside-down text into almost any app, how look-alike Unicode characters create the effect, and its limitations.
Plain text has no "rotate" button. When you see upside-down text in a social media post, it was not rotated at all. Each letter was replaced with a different character that happens to look like an upside-down version of the original.
Unicode makes it possible
Unicode is the international standard that assigns a number to every character in nearly every writing system, plus thousands of symbols. Among them are letters from the International Phonetic Alphabet and other scripts that resemble rotated Latin letters:
| Normal | Upside down | Source |
|---|---|---|
| a | ɐ | IPA "turned a" |
| e | ǝ | "turned e" |
| h | ɥ | IPA "turned h" |
| t | ʇ | IPA "turned t" |
| ? | ¿ | Spanish inverted question mark |
Some letters work naturally: "p" upside down looks like "d", and "n" looks like "u".
Reversing the order too
When you rotate a line of text by 180 degrees, the last letter ends up first. So an upside-down converter must swap each character and also reverse the order. Our upside-down text generator does both, so the result reads correctly if you turn your screen over.
Limitations
- Not every letter has a perfect match. Some capitals and symbols have only rough look-alikes or none, so they stay unchanged.
- Font support varies. Rare characters may appear as empty boxes on older devices.
- Search and accessibility suffer. Search engines and screen readers see unrelated characters, not your words.
Where it works best
Short phrases in bios, comments, games and messages. For anything people need to find, read or act on, stick to normal text.
