Why Special Text Sometimes Fails When You Paste It

Common reasons upside-down, mirror and stylized text shows as boxes or question marks, and how to fix compatibility problems.

You create some upside-down text, paste it into an app and see empty boxes, question marks or nothing at all. Here is why it happens and what you can do.

1. The font does not include the character

Every device draws text using fonts. If the fonts installed do not contain a particular rare symbol, the system shows a placeholder box, sometimes nicknamed "tofu". Newer devices and operating systems include broader font coverage.

Fix: update your device, or try a simpler effect such as reversed letters, which uses only ordinary characters.

2. The app filters characters

Some platforms strip or block characters outside a basic set, especially in usernames, search boxes and game chat.

Fix: use special characters only in fields that accept them, such as display names or posts.

3. Encoding problems

Older websites and email systems that do not use UTF-8 can corrupt characters into question marks or random symbols such as "é".

Fix: for developers, store and serve everything as UTF-8. For users, try another app or plain text.

4. Character limits count differently

Some special characters count as two characters internally, so a name that looks short may exceed a limit.

Fix: shorten the text or use fewer special characters.

5. Copying the wrong thing

Copying from a styled web page sometimes copies hidden formatting or only part of a character.

Fix: use the Copy button in the reverse text generator, which copies exactly the plain text shown.

Test before you publish

Paste the text into a draft or private message first and view it on another device. If it displays correctly on both, your audience will most likely see it too.

Frequently asked questions

Why does text show as boxes?

Why text shows as boxes: the device's fonts don't include the characters. This is the most common reason for special characters not showing. Updating the device usually helps.

How to fix special characters not showing?

Try another app, update your device, or switch to a simpler effect such as reversed letters, which uses only normal characters. Paste into a draft first to test.
