When Should You Use All Caps?

Appropriate uses of uppercase text in writing, design and marketing, and why long passages of capitals hurt readability.

Typing in all capitals is often read as shouting online, but uppercase still has legitimate uses. The key is to use it sparingly and for short text.

Good uses of uppercase

  • Acronyms and initializms: NASA, HTML, SEO.
  • Short labels in design: navigation tabs, eyebrow text above headings, badges such as "NEW".
  • Warnings on physical signs and packaging: "DANGER", "HIGH VOLTAGE".
  • Legal disclaimers, where some laws require "conspicuous" text. Many lawyers now prefer bold text instead.
  • Constants and environment variables in programming.

Why long uppercase text is hard to read

Lowercase words have distinctive shapes created by ascenders (b, d, h) and descenders (g, p, y). Uppercase letters are all the same height, so words become uniform rectangles and readers must work harder to recognize them. Long passages in capitals slow reading and increase errors.

Accessibility

Some screen readers may spell out short words in capitals letter by letter, treating them as acronyms. If you want capitals for visual style, a better approach is to write the text normally and apply uppercase with CSS (text-transform: uppercase), so assistive technology reads the original words.

In emails and messages

ALL CAPS in subject lines and messages can come across as aggressive or spammy. Use bold or a clear sentence for emphasis instead.

Fixing caps you did not mean to type

If you have written a paragraph with Caps Lock on, paste it into the case converter and choose Sentence case. Then re-capitalize names and acronyms.

Uppercase is a strong tool. Like any strong tool, it works best in small amounts.
